Take a guided boat trip from Brønnøysund to Lånan via Gardsøy, Norway’s largest eiderdown nesting site, and learn about the century-old tradition of eider stewardship that helped earn Vega its UNESCO World Heritage status. Explore the island, meet the bird wardens, and hear stories of island life past and present.
You will enjoy a guided boat trip out to Lånan from Brønnøysund, starting at 12:00. The bird guardians will meet you at the dock and take you on a fantastic walk through the kingdom of the eider ducks. Here, you will learn about the unique relationship between the eiders and their human protectors — how, every year, we care for the nesting ducks and harvest their down, clean it, and use it to make the world’s finest eiderdown duvets.
We will also share stories about growing up on a “deserted island,” life at the boarding school on Skogsholmen, and how World War II affected Lånan.
The tour ends with coffee and traditional krinalefse served in the old barn, where you’ll also find a photo exhibition about life on Lånan.
The trip requires a minimum of 20 participants and allows a maximum of 25. The boat trip takes approximately 1hrs and 30 minutes each way, with a three-hour stay on Lånan island, a total of six hours.
